Navy Green Supportive Housing
Brooklyn, New York City

NYC HPD considers Navy Green Supportive Housing one of the agency’s marquis projects for design excellence within the Supportive Housing program. On the outside it’s a bold beacon; the building is perceived as a billboard from the expressway, and a warm and welcoming neighbor at the street. A boldly-shaped canopy wraps a double-height glazed storefront and becomes a bench and planter enclosure, creating a welcoming gesture for residents. For many of them, this is their first stable home and community.

The beacon of Navy Green is a bold red eight-story building whose cheerful disposition belies its serious mission. “Life's too short for subtlety,” explains Matthew Bremer, principal of New York–based Architecture in Formation. “We designed a billboard building to have a presence from the highway and on the street.”

“The Ramphitheater” is a double-height, multi-purpose gathering space created through expressively and creatively integrating an ADA-compliant ramp with casual seating required for a 42” grade change from the street to the rear courtyard.
