Espasso NYC
Tribeca, New York City
Espasso is the primary US liaison to highly iconic modern 20 th and 21 st century Brazilian design. We converted a 8,000 SF raw storefront space in Tribeca into Espasso’s Manhattan flagship showroom. The design of the 2-stiry space aims to assert a clear brand identity that does not compete with the extraordinary, sustainably-harvested wood products from Brazil. The main staircase linking to the showroom downstairs, dedicated to the work of Sergio Rodriguez, doubles as an amphitheater, informal seating area, and display platform, provoking various opportunities to experience these highly unique objects in unexpected ways.
"Espasso is the premier gallery for 20th and 21st century Brazilian design. The best objects and furniture from the best names in Brazilian design appear here. We couldn't invite just one Brazilian architect to imagine Espasso, so we brought on Matthew, who has a huge appreciation for Brazilian design and architecture to create the perfect neutral complimentary backdrop in NYC."

The single universally accessible bathroom was a fun design move: rather than fitting it into the service spaces, it becomes a sculptural object within the showroom - a 7.5' x 7.5' x 7.5' rotated cube. The sink inside recalls Roberto Burle Marx' landscapes, and perfectly accommodates universal ADA requirements.
